Early Spring Snow Fall

We’re not getting to anxious for Spring just yet. This morning we woke up to temperatures just below freezing and snow falling from the cloudy sky. The ground is patchy white and the flurries are still in the air as of 10am. We’re lazying around this morning till around noon, then will be getting out to continue on the garden expansion! I think I am more excited about it than my wife is. Maybe that’s because it’s still cold out.

Drew Tabke WebsiteI just got done with a Wordpress Template for Freeskier Drew Tabke. He is currently, as of March 2008, in 4th on the Freeride World Tour. He rides for Praxis Skis, tours around the worlds best mountains from Russia to Verbier and throws down! Now we can try and keep up with Drew’s 2008 winter online.

Watch the video of him in the Freeride World Tour in Verbier!

You can check out the new site here: http://www.DrewTabke.com

First Flowers of Spring and Chicken’s Scratch

First Iris’ of the Spring! It’s the latter end of March and I have been looking at the small Iris’ and bulbs starting to show all over the yard. The deer have been staying out mostly, we’re thankful for that. Last year the deer really ate up all the small tulip starts, which is to be expected. This year, my wife strung up a higher fence around the front yard to keep them at bay, and it’s worked!

We are also doing an experiment this year in the garden. The chickens were in half of it all winter long. They managed to get every bit of grass and weed that showed up, as well as fertilized in their wake. The other half of the garden, we have been pulling all the grass out by hand. Our experiment is to see if the chickens do a better job at weeding than we do. We’ll see in about 2 months when things begin to really grow.

A good friend of ours likes how chicken’s scratch around, so I took a small clip of Snowball, the chicken, scratching in the garden.

Kevin O’Meara takes 2nd Place US Freeskiing Snowbird

I just want to shout out a “big up!” for Kevin O’Meara, riding Praxis Skis, taking second at Snowbird this year, 2008. The US Freeskiing Series is rad to watch and even more rad to compete in. Kevin’s been killing it for the last 3 season’s, taking finishes in every comp he enters. So here’s to you man! Take 1st at Kirkwood!

We hit Jackson Hole with 18″ Plus of Fresh

Jackson Hole Looking at Sublet Chair

14.5 hours there, 14.5 hours back. That’s all it takes. It’s about 2 good audio books or 5 live Grateful Dead shows, both sets. We had other music though. Oh, don’t ever bother to listen to The Broker on audio CD, it’s terrible.

We followed the USFreeskiing tour out to watch and support our buddy Kevin O’Meara. Too much fog or cloud layer on the hill for the first couple days of the comp, so we didn’t get to see him run. Kevin ended up in 10th overall.

The first day we skied it was about 6″ of dust on crust. Coming from the Sierra’s, the snow is LIGHT. The following day, the “heavy” day we had, with 18″ of fresh reported, was amazing. Even thought I’ll take an 18″ Sierra powder day, any day, over the light snow in Jackson it was super fun to get face+ shots. The terrain in the image to the left is below Sublet chair. Sick terrain!, but alas, it was closed. You do hit rocks there. Just gotta be light on the skis you know!

Below is a video that we shot on the way out with my digital camera. Each clip is 30 seconds, then it’s all sped up 1000% and put to Immaculate Machine’s Jarhand. The song is funny with the little, didoodidoo diiidooodidooo keyboard part.

Happy Vernal Equinox! (1st day of spring)

Vernal Equinox Image ExplainIn the early morning of March 20, 2008 the sun will cross directly over the Earth’s equator. This moment is known as the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. For the Southern Hemisphere, this is the moment of the autumnal equinox. Equinox means “equal night.” Because the sun is positioned above the equator, day and night are about equal in length all over the world during the equinoxes. A second equinox occurs each year on September 22 or 23; in 2008. This will be the Autumnal Equinox. Thus switching the autumnal equinox to the Northern Hemisphere and the vernal equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. The date is significant in Christianity because Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

A Bomber SkiDoo Cover and 2″ Handlebar Risers

I have a 2000 SkiDoo 700 Summit to get around in woods during the winters here in NorCal. For my birthday this year, my mom and step-dad bought me a cover to keep the SkiDoo in “like new” condition for as long as possible. It’s a great cover at a resonable price, I recommend it for sure.

SkiDoo Cover

Here’s where to get it: Kuyahoora

I also installed a 2″ riser and better grips on the handlebars. I have driven a Polaris with 4″ or so of rise and it made all the difference when standing up and powering around. I got the risers from Dennis Kirk . If I didn’t have to extend the cables, I’d go 4″+. Maybe a good summer project.

2? SkiDoo Handle Bar Risers

It’s March right now… We are experiencing a bit of a thaw and “false” spring right now. I know it’s going to freeze again. Hopefully this year the Plum Trees don’t blossom until after the coming April Freeze. There is still snow in the hills, and riding has been great. There is no one out, the lakes are frozen, the birds are chirping, the Mountain Lions are prowling, and skiing the corn runs are great!
